CA0163 Rare pair of Grand Tour Medici Apollino and the Satyr Marsyas bronzes

A superb and interesting pairing of two Grand Tour bronze reductions of The Medici Apollino and the Satyr Marsyas after the antique originals in the Uffizi in Florence and the Capitoline Museum, Rome. The Apollino, or Apollon, is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture of the young sun god Apollo discovered in Rome in the 17th century and venerated throughout the 18th century as an ideal form of the human body. The Satyr Marsyas is depicted playing the flute, standing against a column, draped with a skin. In Greek mythology, Marsyas is said to have picked up the double oboe that had been abandoned by Athena he then challenged Apollo to a contest of music and lost his hide and life for his hubris in challenging a god. Good quality early 19th century patinated pair presented on beautiful Rouge Griotte block bases. French or Italian, circa 1810.
