CA0161 Fine elegant bronze of the god Dionysus after Louis Garnier

Rare, fine quality, late 18th/early 19th century dark patinated bronze of the god Dionysus/Bacchus in the manner of Louis Garnier (1639-1728). Garnier was a French professor of sculpture and later Dean of the Academie de St. Luc in Paris. He specialised in bronze working with François Girardon at the Paris Arsenal from 1686 to 1692. His most famous work is the strikingly original Parnasse Français at Versalles. The stunning semi naked figure stands next to a rustic tree trunk drapped with an animal skin holding a wine cup and grapes. An elegant beautifully modelled bronze, superbly cast and chased. Could once have been part of a pair as there is an infill to the base on the left hand side and signs of a small hole to the right on the flat base. Casting fault to left wrist. Fantastic example of a rare bronze. France, circa 1800.
