CA1147 'Au Bon Sauvage' Atala Clock
Early 19th Century French Empire gilt bronze mantel clock depicting a scene from the romantic short story of Atala and Chactas by Viscount François-René de Chateaubriand, published 1801 and the Pierre-Jérôme Lordon painting of the doomed lovers. In the tradition of the 'Au Bon Sauvage' clocks of the Directoire and Consulat period, for whom American exoticism was a great novelty, this version simply shows Atala picking pomegranates. 8 day silk suspension movement. Circa 1830.
