CA0193 Rare Egyptian Revival candlesticks after Thomas Hope
A very rare pair of English early 19th century patinated and gilt bronze Egyptian Revival candlesticks after a design by Thomas Hope. Designed with Egyptian female figures standing against an obelisk inscribed with hieroglyths with foliate candle cups and square marble bases. Possibly once a pair of adaptable candelabra as the candle cups show little sign of use and have been enlarged internally to fit a pair of french early 19th century mercury gilded bronze flame designed snuffers. England, circa 1815.
Similar figures are illustrated in Thomas Hope's 'Household Furniture and Interior Decoration published in 1807 {see plate XI).These candlesticks were possibly made by William Bullock who opened his 'Egyptian Museum' in Piccadily in London in 1812.
