CA0198 Fine Empire Astronomy clock after Jean-André Reiche

Superb, fine quality early 19th century French Empire period gilt ormolu bronze and Marbre Vert 'Astronomie' mantel clock after designs by Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817) in 1807. Surmounted by a seated figure of Urania, the daughter of Zeus and the goddess of astronomy and navigation, with a globe, books and an astral map. Fine ormolu frieze depicting a winged putti observing the heavens through a telescope. White enamel dial signed 'Tison à Paris' with Breguet moon hands. Eight day silk suspension movement. Marble block base and very fine quality feet. Beautiful example, well cast and chiselled with both matt and burnished mercury gilt bronze finishes. France, circa 1810.
