CA0232 Very Rare pair of Grand Tour Herms of Zeus and Juno
Fascinating, rare, possibly unique, pair of 19th century Italian bronze and marble Grand Tour herms of the Zeus of Otricoli and the Juno Ludovisi, after the antique. In ancient Greek and Roman sculture a statue with a head on a tall pedestal was referred to as a herm. The Zeus of Otricoli was discovered in 1775 and is believed to be a Roman copy of a 4th century BC Hellenistic original that can be seen today in the Sala Rotonda in the Pio-Clementine Vatican Museum. The Juno Ludovisi (also known as Hera Ludovisi) is a colossal marble bust of Antonia Minor/Augusta, the mother of the Emperor Claudius, portrayed as the goddess Juno, from the 1st century AD and now resides in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome. Goethe's house in Weimar has a cast of the bust. Well cast but with wear to the patination presented on Marmo Tessalico Verde Antico pedestals with black marble block bases.
