CA0274 Fine Grand Tour bronze of the Crouching Venus

Fine example of a late 19th century patinated bronze of the 'Aphrodite of Doidalses' or 'Crouching Venus', the goddess of love, after the 1686 version in the Palace of Versailles by Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720) and now on permanent display in the Louvre, Paris. Depicted crossing her arms in an attempt to conceal her nudity as she appears on land reasting on a turtle. Presented on an associated white marble block plinth base. Celebrated in antiquity and a model for artists of the Renaissance, this iconographic image has been copied many times with small variations throughout history. Other versions on dispaly include Medici in the Tribuna of the Uffizi; the Museo Nazionale delle Terme, Rome; the Vatican Museums; British Museum and the Royal Collection. Good size, well cast example. French, circa 1870.
