CA0285 Rare pair of bronze Night and Day plaques after Thovaldsen
A fine pair of 19th century richly patinated bronze neoclassical plaques of Night and Day after Bertel Thorvaldsen 1770-1844. First executed in 1815, Night is personified floating in the sky, her eyes closed as are those of the children in her embrace. Her hair braided with poppies known from antiquity to induce sleep. Day flies actively across the sky with a torch bearing putti symbolising the sun. Original gilt slips and black ebonise frames.
