CA0302 Rare 19th Century bronze of The Anger of Achilles
Rare enigmatic 19th century patinated bronze of a Greek warrior dynamically drawing his sword in anger or to avenge his honour. Probably a representation of the Trojan War possibly Achilles swearing vengance on the ashes of Patroclus or in confrontation with King Agamemnon. The pose has similarities to figures on some Empire period clocks including one identical one by Gerard-Jean Galle and the painting 'The Anger of Achilles' completed in 1819 by Jacques Louis David. There are also certain similarities to a Roman fresco of Achilles attacking Agamemnon from the House of the Dioscuri in Pompeii. It could also be a representation of Hector as it is very similar in the style to Antonio Canova's sculpture of Hector - especially the face and headdress. Substantial bronze, well cast, presented on a later marbre vert, green marble, block base. France, circa 1825.
