CA0334 Rare French Empire au bon sauvage 'Le Matelot' miniature clock
Early 19th century miniature gilt ormolu and patinated bronze French Empire period 'au bon sauvage' mercantile commerce themed timepiece after designs by Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764-1824). Deverberie is known to have had a shop in 1804 at the Boulevard du Temple and the drawing of this design is illustrated in the Cahier de Dessin de Pendules of the Cabinet des Estampes, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and is inscribed 'Le Matelot'. Beautiful early case with an African sailor dressed in gold pantaloons leaning against a tied cotton bale with a ship's anchor. On top of the bale sits a bag of coins. Oval plinth base with a dolphin and wheat mount sitting on four toupee feet. Enamel dial and later hands. Movement replaced or updated. France, circa 1810.
