CA0296 Important Marble Apollino Library Statue

Important late 18th or early 19th century white marble library statue of the Apollino or Medici Apollo, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic sculpture of the adolescent sun god Apollo. Discovered in Rome in the 17th century it was originally in the Borghese collection but then moved to the Medici collection in 1704. In 1769-70 it was moved to Florence and is now in the Uffizi. Venerated throughout the eighteenth century as an ideal form of the human body it was a highlight of the Grand Tour and a popular item addition to your collection. Presented on a purpose built academic wooden block base. Good substantial example. Old repair and slight loses. Italian, probably Florence.
