Grand Tour Borghese Gladiator
Good quality early 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze of the Borghese Gladiator, after the antique. Set upon a Sienna marble base. Based on the Hellenistic original statue discovered by Cardinal Scipion Borghese in the early 17th Century. In 1808, the statue left Italy for the Louvre, following the purchase of the collection by Napoleon I from his brother-in-law, Prince Camille Borghese. it is said to be the perfect example of the male nude in motion. Circa 1830.
